Although it may be a few months or maybe couple of years away from when you would be seeing your first Indian Wal-Mart Store, that does't mean they do not have a strategy in place. Wal-Mart being in China for sometime now has only managed to open 57 stores and has been critiqued for its slow pace of change and expansion although more has to do with Chinese Laws.
Wal-Mart plans to take its key learnings from its International Expansion covering places like Mexico to China. The key learning everywhere Wal-Mart has learnt is to localize. Thats something many companies tend to forget. Wal-Mart already plans to set its stores in India with a huge spice section where customers can have it custom grind. Thats something that is typically done in your corner store and not even in large and established Indian retailers. The strategy would include setting up about 12 to 18 stores in the first 18 months of entry in big and small cities.
